¡Que emoción! We are so happy to introduce Adriana Rivera. Adriana is one of the vendors that calls Mestiza their Casa. Her colorful items bring joy to many in the Chicago area. Adriana's products and paintings of her character, DACHI, are one of Mestiza Shop favorites. By popular demand, soon some of her products will be available online at mestizashop.com.
We are also delighted to celebrate with Adriana the anniversary of the creation of DACHI. We will be celebrating Mestiza-style, with giveaways and gifts for attendees. Quien dijo yo?

¿Cuándo empezaste a crear arte, cuál fue el catalizador que inició tu jornada como artista?
Yo empecé a pintar en el año del 2009. Fue cuando conocí a el maestro José Luis Piña Morales, y el me impulsó a que yo creara cosas. Así fue como empecé haciendo gravados y pintura. Pero el personaje de DACHI comenzó años más tarde. Surgió por que yo le quería dar un regalo a mi hija. Y de ahí surgió la DACHI, con ojos grande y negros profundos con cabeza grande desproporcionada con su cuerpo. Quería hacerle algo original y raro a la vez.
Un día el mismo maestro José L Piña Morales organizó un festival en la villita, se trataba de un festival de arte, el objetivo era motivar a los jóvenes y que se acercarán más al arte y se alejarán de las pandillas. Bueno, en ese festival yo lleve la pintura que le había hecho a mi hija. Solo la lleve como parte de la exhibición y mi sorpresa fue a mucha gente les gusto, ¡y varios me la querían comprar! Ahí fue cuando tome la decisión de hacer más muñecas con ojos grandes que ahora se llaman DACHI. Continúe haciéndole a mi otra hija y a mis sobrinas y después empecé a hacer personajes reconocidos, pero con el estilo DACHI.
Así empezó la historia de DACHI, pero también hago otro tipo de pintura, trato temas sociales y de activismo.
When did you start creating art, what was the catalyst that started your journey as an artist?
I started painting in 2009. It was when I met the teacher, José Luis Piña Morales, and he encouraged me to create. That's how I started doing prints and paintings. The character of DACHI began years later. It started because I wanted to give my daughter a gift. That is how DACHI was created, with big eyes and deep blacks with a big head disproportionate to his body. I wanted to make something original and strange at the same time.
One day the same teacher, José L Piña Morales, organized a festival in Little Village, it was an art festival and the goal was to motivate young people to get closer to art and away from the gangs. Well, at that festival I brought the painting I had done for my daughter. I just took it as part of the exhibition and my surprise was that many people liked it, and several wanted to buy it from me! That's when I made the decision to make more dolls with big eyes that are now called DACHI. I continued making one for my other daughter and my nieces and then I started to make well-known characters, but with the DACHI style.
This is how the story of DACHI began, but I also do other types of paintings, I deal with social issues and activism.

¿Qué has aprendido sobre ti misma haciendo arte?
He aprendido que el querer es poder. Y que las barreras se las pone uno mismo. Igualmente, que la constancia es un factor muy importante para alcanzar tus metas.
He aprendido que soy capaz de vencer retos, pero eso se lo debo a la confianza que la gente ha puesto en mi y en mi trabajo. Por ejemplo, el trabajar con Arturo Lizalde director del festival de cortometrajes Little México Film Festival. Este festival se lleva a cabo anualmente y a sido un reto para mi. El haber colaborado con el logo en la edición del 2017 Migración y Culturalfue algo muy satisfactorio.
También tuve la oportunidad de trabajar con ECA espacio comunitario de Aurora con Erin Skarlata. Ahí también vencí un reto al colaborar con esta organización al hacerles el diseño de Unidas y Empoderada, que trata de unir y empoderarlas a las mujeres.
What have you learned about yourself while making art?
I have learned that if you want it enough, you can make things happen. Also, that barriers are put on by oneself. Perseverance is a very important factor to achieve your goals.
I have learned that I am able to overcome challenges, but I owe that to the trust that people have placed in me and in my work. For example, working with Arturo Lizalde, director of the Little Mexico Film Festival short film festival. This festival takes place annually and has been a rewarding challenge. Having collaborated on the logo in the 2017 Migration and Cultural edition was very satisfying.
I also had the opportunity to work with ECA community space of Aurora with Erin Skarlata where I met another challenge; to collaborate with this organization to design the logo for United and Empowered, which seeks to unite and empower women.

¿Qué le recomendarías a otros artistas que quieran crear y vender sus obras de arte?
Les recomiendo que le hagan caso a su corazón y persigan sus sueños, que sean persistentes y que luchen por lo que quieren. Habrá puertas que se cierren pero habrá muchas más puertas que se abrirán!
What would you recommend to other artists who want to create and sell their works of art?
I would recommend listening to your heart and pursuing your dreams, to be persistent and to fight for what you want. There will be doors that close, but there will be many more doors that will open!

Dales a tus fans una pista, ¿en qué estás trabajando ahora? ¿qué se puede esperar de DACHI en el 2019?
A mis fans, ¡gracias por su apoyo y preferencia! Lo que les puedo adelantar es que vienen muchas cosas muy padres. Entre ellas varias de edición limitada, ¡eso va a estar muy padre! Así podrás tener algo único. También, estoy trabajando en tratar de que la DACHI se convierta en muñeca física. ¡Espérenla!

What can you expect from DACHI in 2019?
To my fans, thank you for your support and preference! What I can share with you is that there are many cool things in the works. Among them, several are limited editions that will be so wonderful! So you’ll be able to have something that is one of a kind. Also, I'm working on transforming DACHI into a physical doll. Wait for her unveiling!
